Decorating Your Home for Sale: Where to Begin
So you have renovated and you have decluttered your home. Great! But you are hesitating on starting the decorating process – after all you won’t be living here much longer, and before you know it, that “For Sale” sign will be posted in your front lawn, and you’ll be packing up your moving boxes – so why bother? Well truth be told, it is entirely up to you whether you want to go through with this final step, but decorating can make all the difference in the impression of your home – as it improves the chances of potential buyers picturing themselves in the home.
So sit back, relax, and follow along as we discuss the home decorating process; outlining the starting and ending steps.
Apply a Fresh Coat of Paint
If you lumped this step in with your renovations, then good for you because you’re now a step ahead of the game! If you didn’t then it’s no problem because you still have time. Adding a fresh coat of paint to each room of your home can go a long way; as it implies an up-kept, clean atmosphere to potential buyers. Whether you choose to do it yourself, or hire a professional, this first step can make all the difference on a first impression.
Just make sure to stick to a neutral palette here, as you don’t want to distract buyers from the expensive renovations you’ve just spent time, energy, and money undertaking.
Lights, Lights, and More Lights!
Open up those blinds, fix that broken bulb, and add in that new lamp to the otherwise dark corners of your living room. Nothing is worse than going to a promising showing, switching on a light, and nothing happens. Each room of your home needs to be presented to interested buyers, but this won’t be possible if the lighting does not perform.
Update and Refresh Old Furniture
It isn’t necessary for you to go spend big bucks on brand new furniture that won’t fit into your new home – but updating and cleaning the furniture you do have will only benefit you. Whether there is a tear in your couch, or stains on the carpet, adding a couch slip and bringing in a cleaner will pose for a quick fix.
Window Treatments
It seems that this step is the most overlooked… but probably the most distracting. Whether you have patterned curtains from the 70’s, or broken blinds that have an inch of dust caked on them, it is vital for you to clean and update them. This doesn’t have to be expensive, but spending that extra bit of time caring for the main attraction of each room will improve the chances of a positive impression.
Rearrange, Remove, and Recycle
Depending on the size and features of your home, and each individual room, this step can be tricky – but important to try nonetheless. Moving or removing a dresser in a bedroom, changing the position of your couch, or even switching the room a piece of furniture is in, could complete change the atmosphere of a home.
Add – But Don’t Clutter
You’ve already decluttered your home, and we don’t want you to overcrowd your home again– but adding in a single throw blanket and a decorative pillow, or a new rug to your living room will help create a homey, lived-in, atmosphere that will be the tipping point for selling your home.
